Effects of Work Related Stress

I know that you have heard the statement stress can kill you.  It can increase the risk of heart disease and death.  It can lead to higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol.  When you are under stress your body is in a "fight or flight" mode.  Your body is set up to prepare for an emergency action.  Your brain is releasing  a series of chemical alarms.  Your nervous system releases stress hormones including adrenaline. norepinephrine and cortisol.  These hormones are racing through our bloodstream getting us ready to either flee or stay and battle it out.  The heart rate and blood flow increase to give us energy to run faster and fight harder.  Our blood sugar reves up to give us energy.  Our digestive and reproductive system slows down and the growth hormones are switched off and the imune response is switched off.

Heart Attack and Stress

I heard this on our local news station:  Studies have shown working 3 hours overtime in a 7 hour work day increases the risk of a heart attack by about 60 % and stress is the linking factor!

Making that extra money workng overtime is not worth it if you cannot enjoy it.

Now I worked 55 hours the last complete week I worked on my job the nest week I was not able to complete the week.  I had a black out spell hit my head and sustained a concussion.
